This program has typically been held in August. However, in response to feedback from the colleges, it was moved to April in order not to conflict with registration and other activities at the beginning of the school year. The theme was, “Transforming Our Landscape: Removing Barriers – Expanding Access.”
Approximately 300 participants gathered at the Marriott in Baton Rouge for the conference which began on Thursday evening with a State of the System address from President Joe D. May, followed by a reception sponsored by Chase Bank. Conference sponsorship was also provided by Breazeale, Sachse & Wilson, Plato, Inc. and Paradigm Publishing. A variety of door prizes donated by the colleges were given away at the reception.
On Friday, 21 breakouts were offered on topics related to system initiatives, academic and student affairs, operations, and workforce.

The closing session featured Tim Barfield, secretary of the Louisiana Department of Labor, who presented Governor Jindal’s plans for transforming workforce and economic development in the state.
Overall, participants rated the conference highly. There was also a good representation of the Board of Supervisors at the event.
Plans for 2009 are already underway. Please mark your calendars for April 23-25 and the Shreveport Convention Center. Information on the conference will be provided throughout the year as it becomes available. A request for proposals will be issued in September.
