CTE Spotlight: Career and Technical Student Organizations - SkillsUSA

SkillsUSA Louisiana Post-Secondary is the largest collegiate workforce exhibition and competition within the state. Nationally, SkillsUSA serves more than 360,000 students and instructors annually and answers the call of the American industry by helping to produce better-prepared employees for the technical workforce. The organization has 6,322 school chapters with over 25,000 training programs in 54 state and territorial associations. More than 20,000 instructors and administrators are professional members of SkillsUSA. Postsecondary students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations, can benefit from programs and experiences leading to job readiness. Students also can compete in state and national competitions where they demonstrate occupational and leadership skills and win valuable prizes. Members develop technical, academic, and work readiness skills that help them jumpstart a successful career. Through chapter meetings, competition, and leadership conferences, students build the skill set to succeed. The Louisiana Post-Secondary state association works with all the 12 colleges within the community college system to advance the mission of the national office, which is to provide students with the tools, skills, and knowledge needed to have an advanced career in skilled based areas. SkillsUSA is more than an opportunity for students to showcase the unique capabilities that they have learned within the classroom, but a time for them to connect with global partners and peers while working to become positive and impactful contributors to society. This spring the state association will host over 30 competitions in which over 300 students will compete virtually and within a hybrid capacity. Students who place gold will advance onto the national platform where they have an opportunity to win prizes and scholarship money. The national SkillsUSA office is based out of Leesburg, Virginia and the Louisiana Post-Secondary state association is based out of the LCTCS office in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
