The Louisiana Community & Technical College System (LCTCS) now offers multiple options for achieving your high school equivalency.

HiSET examination logoGraphical computer monitor with two buttons (checkmark and an "x")Since January of 2014, Louisiana has offered the HiSET® exam to qualifying individuals to allow them to earn a high school equivalency credential. PSI HiSET® works closely with states to ensure the HiSET® exam closely reflects the skills of a high school graduate and to provide a fair, rigorous exam. Built on the OCTAE College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education, the HiSET® exam gives out-of-school youth and adults the opportunity to demonstrate their skills and knowledge and earn a state-issued high school equivalency (HSE) credential.

Eligibility Requirements

  • You must be at least 16 years of age to take the HiSET exam.
  • You must be at least 19 years of age to take the exam without providing any additional documentation.
  • If you are 16–18 years of age, you must provide all of the following additional documentation to be eligible to test:
    • Enrollment in and/or authorization by an approved WorkReady U program.
    • Enrollment in a state-recognized LA "Options" program within the K–12 system with the required testing authorization.
    • HiSET Official Practice Test for Educators administered by WRU program with state qualifying scores (Prepared or Well-Prepared).

Students can earn a high school equivalency (HSE) by demonstrating college readiness via two different methods -- completion of a college placement assessment or completion of college preparation (developmental) coursework. Explanations for both methods are outlined below.

Completion of a College PLacement Assessment

A student who is 18 years old or older can earn the minimum standard score on an approved placement test that is based on established placement scores of recognized college readiness assessments in Mathematics, English, and Reading. A performance level congruency alignment will be reviewed annually by the LCTCS.
*All components must be completed within 5 years of the application date.

Completion of College Preparation Coursework

A student can demonstrate college readiness by completing developmental coursework in Mathematics, English, and Reading at an LCTCS college. Courses need not be taken at the same LCTCS college.
